Our Last Tuesday and assignments for 5/22/09

Dear Families,

It was so nice to be back in class. I made everyone hug me (whether they wanted to or not)! Many thanks to Mrs. Tronda for assisting us today. We had our last show and tell then heard another Bible Story about Paul's conversion. In Latin, we just worked on our flashcards. In history, we went over our review questions and learned more about the fierce Maori of New Zealand. Mrs. Nicole stopped in and has been to New Zealand and added to our discussion. We went outside and spun "butterflies". Ask your child to tell you about the background on that activity. In Grammar, we spent the whole time diagramming sentences which is what we'll do on Friday as well.

In Literature, we heard the great tall tales that the students created. They were awesome! We had a great time creating and having our own competitions as the men at Mr. Crockett's tavern loved to brag about. We tried talking about diligence and responsibility a bit more. In science we made a game of reviewing the study guide for our test. Pretty much everyone already knows all that is on the guide. See if your student can stump you.

We had one more history activity in which we pretended to trade valuable quarters for triple chocolate cookies. We began to understand how the Maori felt when they found they could only sell their land to the British. We ended the day watching Sarah's copy of Davy Crockett.

There's little to do for next time but we will have a bit of school. Since we have the sub sandwiches coming, I've decided to provide an ice cream dessert to reward the students for their pebbles and how good they were for Mrs. Gant.

Keep checking your e-mails this week.

love,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for 5/19/09

Dear Families,

I'm so very proud of my students! I spoke with Mrs. Debi Gant at church this morning. She told me that you were great! She said you all behaved very well and that it was a good day. She is a lady that does not hand out compliments frivolously so I know you really were great! Thank you!

I had a wonderful weekend celebrating with my family this past weekend. Thank you for praying for me. God was good to us and blessed our time in Pennsylvania. I now "own" a college graduate!

I look forward to Tuesday with you. Remember that we will have our last show and tell. Be sure to watch for e-mails from me over the next few days. As I get my feet back on the ground and the plans for the end of our school year formulate, I know I'll have much to share with you including plans for our end-of-the-year open house on Friday evening.

See you Tuesday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Reflections on Today and assignments for 5/15/09

Dear Parents,

We had a great day. We did several activities outside. I'm not sure if I stirred them up with those or its just spring fever, but our behavior was not good. I scolded several times, we had no pebbles put in our cup, and I'm exhausted. Please encourage your student to work with me to finish this awesome year in an excellent manner.

Mrs. Mary Sanders was our helper and helped me so much. Many thanks. In Bible, we went outside and acted out the stoning of Peter (Sarah). We even layed our coats at Saul's (Amelia) feet.

In Latin, we listened to the last lesson in our book. We recited the Lord's Prayer and stumped Mrs. Tkach. In history, I was a bit disappointed in the books recommended in SOTW that the library tracked down for me. They were all too long to read at school. They did have some great pictures so we perused them and I taught them some Texas history that I knew. We went out to the courtyard and played a great Texas Ranger game using our badges. Have your child explain it to you.

In grammar we touched on a few more lessons. We probably won't do any grammar next week because the last lessons are on poetry and I feel we covered everything we needed to back when we did our poetry unit in literature. In literature, we walked and found a pile of leaves. We spread a blanket on it and took turns laying on it to feel what Davy had to sleep on. When someone brought up red bugs we wondered if Davy had to worry about them in his mattress. We also tried to walk silently through leaves as Davy's Uncle Joe taught him to do. Lastly, we filled out a sheet with questions about our book that we hope to find answers to by the end of the book.

We conducted our last science lab. It was great fun and quite messy. We dropped golf balls into a pan of flour from different heights. We were trying to simulate how craters are made on the moon. Be sure and ask your student about it.

When I realized that my library books were not going to be very effective for class reading, I grabbed the lego box as a time filler. We all tried building a Alamo model. It was fun and several were accurately done--even having James Bowie sick in bed but fighting to the death from his sick bed. Be sure and ask your student to tell about Travis' line in the dirt and how Bowie got across it.

The day ended with a little more lego fun and a few more pages in The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I will miss my students on Friday but I'm most thankful to God for the opportunity to celebrate my son's hard work for the last four years. I will pray for you while I'm gone. Be good to Mrs. Debi and treat her with kindness and respect. Oh yes, I want to put off our last show-and-tell until Tuesday. I want to enjoy your treasures!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

One Busy Day!!! and assignments for 5/12/09

Dear Families,

Whew! It's May and we're all so busy with all the things that culminate in May. It is a struggle to keep the children focused so that we may finish well. I'm in complete sympathy with them. We keep marching on. . .

Bible is always a great time. We heard another story about the miracles of the Early Church and then had fun with a word search. In Latin we stumped Mrs. Tkach and it cost me a lot of Air Heads. Almost everyone recited the Lord's Prayer and we finished learning the First Declension. (All we really need to remember at this point is that declensions go with nouns. Next week we'll learn about conjugations which go with verbs.)

History was packed today! We heard two books: Brother Eagle, Sister Sky and The Trail of Tears. We went over our review questions and learned some Indian sign language. We then plowed on into the next chapter. I read it to them (ch. 39), we did the map work, received a color page, and got a narration together to keep their notebooks complete. My plan is to have all of next week on TEXAS!!! We'll have some fun and learn as well.

Literature was the best! The first preacher I had upon moving to Beaufort taught me "It is much easier to ask forgiveness than permission." Frederick came to our room and was Mr. Crockett. We went across the street and he taught us to shoot at a coon skin cap with his air-soft gun. We even rested our elbow on a stool as Davy did in the book. The gun wasn't very authentic but with this age, no one cared. Everyone got two chances and no one (not even Frederick) hit the target. We made an effort to clean up the plastic pellets but couldn't find them. They are glow in the dark, so if any of you want to go look for them in the graveyard tonight, please, by all means. . . When a carriage of tourists stopped in our line of fire, I decided it was time to end the activity. In literature we ate cornbread, turnips and hominy just like Davy's family. Riddock LOVES turnips. Mrs. Nicole stopped by and tasted her first ever. What a great sport!

I forgot to mention that Mrs. Brenda Gudzan was our helper and she did a great job. We moved through three easy grammar lessons of which there won't be much homework. In science, I collected the beautiful Solar System Folders and we heard some of the student's reports. Two are coming in on Tuesday. I am so very proud of how everyone did on this project and with these reports. We invited the 4th/5th grade class over to watch "The Magic School Bus gets Lost in Space".

We ended a bit early so we could sign yearbooks in the courtyard. I'm moving one college boy home this weekend and one next week. Remember I will be out on Friday to enjoy Thomas' graduation.

Work hard on your studies. Only four more classes. Happy Mother's Day!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Day and assignments for 5/8/09

Dear Families,

It seems we had a busy day but somehow we finished early and had my room clean, The Witch of Blackbird Pond read, packed and downstairs for an African game before 1:45. We moved swiftly through the day. We missed Riddock and prayed for him. Many thanks to Mrs. Joy for helping us.

Bible was fun because we went outside and sang a song that matched our story and acted it out. We're all just about through memorizing the Pater Noster. We enjoyed a great treat when we went downstairs to the Wax Museum put on by the 4th/5th grade class. They did an amazing job and we all learned from them.

We returned to our classroom for history. After going over our questions, we listened to two books recommended in SOTW: Abiyoyo and Ashanti to Zulu: African Traditions. We looked at some items that were brought from South Africa by my children while on mission trips there. We also visited Pastor Avera's study and looked at some pictures on line that they took while there.

Grammar was next. One thing good about Rod and Staff is the oral review before each lesson. Once again we plowed through three lessons. Some of these I've chosen to have the students just read (telephone manners, etc.) After lunch, we enjoyed a literature activity about our biography genre'. We read biographic facts about historic figures and our friends had to guess who we were. We went over our vocabulary and discussed Davy and his problems thus far. Once again, BE SURE that your definition fits in the context of the story. We'll do "funner" activities with our story next time.

In science, we had a great discussion about the differences in meteoroids, asteroids, meteors, and meteorites. Be sure to see our lab about these and have your student explain the differences. I had some pictures of meteorites for them to look at. For a history enrichment activity, we learned that the Zulu communicated with beads. The colors would carry a meaning and by stringing them in a certain order we could send a friend a message. A key of the meanings went home in their folders. Most made pins but some made bracelets.

It was a good day and I look forward to a great Friday. Please keep up the hard work--summer is almost here!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Friday and assignments for 5/5/09

Dear Families,

We had a busy day and were glad Chloe surprised us by returning one class period early. Many thanks to Mrs. Kristin Miller and Mrs. Dominique for helping us today. We enjoyed a Bible activity with Mrs. Esther's class in the church yard and heard the story of the beginning of the Church. In Latin we attacked another lesson. That's two for this week. The children are doing well with memorizing the Lord's Prayer--I'm very proud of them.

In history, we heard our narrations, and listened to a book on Sojourner Truth and heard a folktale from the old South called The Talking Eggs. We covered a lot in grammar. I plan to finish the book but this may mean we only touch briefly on some of these remaining lessons. A lot of them are about writing and Trinity is planning to have more writing instruction built into the schedule next year.

As we closed out Oliver Twist, we discussed question 10 in the back of the book. Even though things turned out well for Oliver, we know that in real life it does not always seem that way. I taught them about Romans 8:28 and hit once again on the truth that our awesome God can take what is bad and hurtful and He never wanted to happen and somehow pull something good from it. It was a heavy discussion. I gave several examples and ended with: as horrible as slavery was, the Africans heard the Gospel as they attended church with their masters. The likelihood of that many hearing it while in their native tribes in Africa was slim. You may want to draw your children out and further discuss this.

In science we completed the dot-to-dots of the constellations and then began pulling our folders together. I will follow with an e-mail describing exactly how I want them put together. I hope you each have a great weekend and continue to work hard for only 3 more weeks!

I love my students!

A Great Tuesday and assignments for 5/1/09

Dear Families,

We had a great day. Many thanks to Mrs. Kathy Heape for helping and to Mrs. Stokes for helping last week (I forgot to mention her then). Also many thanks to Mrs. Stokes for generously keeping us stocked with delicious snacks.

We did miss Chloe but know she is taking advantage of some great learning experiences. We'll be glad to have her back next Tuesday--we prayed for you today! Sarah left us early so the afternoon was "slim".

Bible was loads of fun. We acted out our story--complete with real fish cooking on the "shore", bread to eat, a fish net, boat, etc. Peter was asked by Jesus if he really loved him three times. Ask your student about our discussion of this. In Latin, I'm putting in two lessons this week so we did alot of the work in class today.

History was tough. Slavery is just painful. Please ask you student to open up about our discussion. (I was very protective of them and explained that they would learn more in depth about this difficult subject in later years.) We discussed a time when we had done something wrong and how we just don't like thinking about it. We compared this to thinking about the slavery period in American history. We read two great books: Big Jade, and Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. Both of these were recommended in SOTW. I chose not to read one recommended about Sojourner Truth because of the harshness/punishment described. We also did the mapwork in class. It's in their folder and some completed their color page.

We plowed through two grammar lessons. We will probably attack 3 a class until school ends. I promise to adjust the homework level so it shouldn't increase over what we've been doing. In Literature, it seems all are enjoying this book. We watched more of the musical Oliver. We'll finish it next time.

We relaxed during science and enjoyed a book about what's beyond Pluto. We got a little silly and practiced the song in their book to remember the order of our planets. All of them can recite them. We finished the day playing a game from SOTW about the different abolitionists. I sent home the page of game cards just FYI. We didn't have much time with the game.

Enjoy your week and let's press on and finish well. Only seven more classes. :(

love,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for 4/28/09

Dear Families,

I'm so sorry to be so late posting. I hope I haven't caused any problems with your homework with your students. The good news is there is a light homework load for Tuesday. It was prom weekend and I got indoctrinated in how much more there is to a girl going to prom than when it was one of my boys! Wow! Manicures, pedicures, hairstylist, endless pictures, pinning-on-boutenier lessons. . . She had a great, safe time so I'm back to real life this afternoon.

We had a great day on Friday. Ask your child to tell you about it. Ask about our pinata, how dating starts in villages in Mexico, the first poinsettia, and the Oliver musical we're watching.

Hope your Sunday is peaceful and restful. I will see you on Tuesday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

reflections on today and assignments for 4/27/09

Whew! We had a packed day and it was great to be back with my students. Many thanks to Mrs. Tronda for being my able assistant.

We've decided to keep the same pace with Bible (3 lessons per week). Today we heard the story and did a Word Search to go along with it. In Latin, we got a good start in making our flashcards. They will finish these for homework and study for Friday's test.

In history, we had a fun competition to see who could record the most facts from a video on Simon Bolivar. We were all rewarded with chocolate (a major product of South America!) but Chloe was the grand prize winner of a huge Hershey's bar with around 30 facts. Everyone did a great job! In literature we did a fun kick-off activity in which we made up our own adventure stories using props we drew from a bag. Ask you student about it--we had a lot of fun. We tasted watered down gruel, which Riddock loved(?) and watched 30 minutes of the musical Oliver.

In science, we finally conducted our Neptune lab. I explained that we will pull all these pages together into a folder to create a Solar System Book. They will receive a grade on the book so I encouraged them to start looking over their pages. If they rushed or did some of them sloppily, I can make more copies for them to re do. I had a great project planned in which we would cook Peruvian Rice Pudding, but we ran out of time. I will probably do it on Friday even though we will have moved out of this chapter.

Lots of plans are being laid for next year. It is an exciting time for Trinity. Let us all pray for God's Wisdom over the planning and that we will know the decisions and paths He has for our school.

Much love to all. . .
Mrs. Tkach

Our last day of March and assignments for 4/3/09

Dear Families,

We had a great day of learning. We reviewed two lessons in Bible with word searches and matching pages. We're back in the book for Latin--covering lesson 20 but still working on the Pater Noster. In history, the children seemed to know more than me about Napoleon and Russia. I taught mostly about the War of 1812, Dolly Madison, The Star Spangled Banner, etc. We zoomed through two grammar lessons. Mrs. Amy McNeal helped us and then Mrs. Able came in when she had to leave for a meeting. Many thanks!

In Literature, we went over homework and then worked on our teepees and built canoes for our Indian Village. Whew! The directions looked so easy on the internet--it turned out to be a struggle but we finished them. We'll make little people on Friday and then set it up for viewing at pick-up and we'll take lots of pictures as well. We read a book about Neptune but did not do the lab yet. The teepees and canoes had us worn out!

Remember, after Friday, we have two weeks off for Spring Break. Take good care of each other and I will see you Friday.

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Dear Families,

I drove to Charleston twice today, once before school and once right after--for my children. Don't ask! Nice thing about that is I'm exhausted and this will be short and sweet. I believe your children learned today--always my goal. Mrs. Rhodes and Mrs. Fowler helped me. I love for you to know what happened with your child while in my care. Ask them to tell you about our day.

How Tuesday Went and Assignments for 3/27/09

Dear Families,

Your child's teacher is fighting Spring Fever more than her students, I'm afraid. My son is home for Spring Break from the Citadel and I'd much rather spend time with him than work. All that to say I am sympathetic to the students that struggle to stay focused as the weather gets more and more beautiful! We had a good day. Mrs. Brenda Gudzan helped us and was wonderful. We acted out the ear being chopped off and healed in Bible then partnered up for more work on the Lord's Prayer in Latin. We'll do that one more time then get back into the book. In History, we watched a portion of a video about Lewis and Clark that is outstanding. It is by Ken Burns and is in the library if any want to finish viewing it. We read some books including one on Johnny Appleseed and then did an exercise in de-ciphering. It was quite difficult but we had a great time. They are to finish it for homework. We also experimented with constructing a cradleboard like Sacagawea used to carry young Pompy.

Grammar was. . .well. . .Grammar. I misread my lesson plans and we will not finish early and will probably have to cover 2 lessons per class to finish the book. In literature, we did an excellent exercise on a character trait web. Be sure to go over it with your student. We got started making our teepees for our Indian village and will finish next time. Science was a treat because we joined the 4th/5th graders and conducted a lab about Uranus. We finished our day with playdough and The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Enjoy learning together this week. Take a minute to go out and watch a butterfly or a bird build a nest. Grab some friends or siblings and play tag. Ponder this Holy Season--we talked about that in class.

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Busy Day and assignments for 3/20/09

Dear Families,

We had a good day. In Bible we discussed how we can "do it unto the least of these" even when it is hard to do. We tried a word search that Arianna made for me last night. We didn't quite finish so the students can finish that at home if they wish. In Latin we did not press on into a new lesson. Instead, we got with partners and worked on the Lord's Prayer. Please be sure those sheets come back to class and we'll do it again next week. In history, we produced a narration that your student has a copy of for their notebook. We heard a Haitian story called The Tap Tap. Ask your student about it. We heard about the cures for malaria tried at home and tried the other two in class. This involved tasting milk and lime juice mixed and a warm mustard salve on our necks to get our blood flowing.

In grammar we keep pounding away at adverbs and adjectives. Lesson 88 today needs special attention at home. It deals with the three question words: how, when, and where being adverbs themselves. It is a bit confusing so go over it well. In literature we talked about the genre biography. This was when we shared our treasures and discussed how the items and picture paint a biographical picture of the owner. We also made pouches like Bird Girl made in the book. In science, your biospheres came home. Aren't they amazing!?!?! We also did a lab about Mars. We're rusting some steel wool. We'll observe it next time and see why Mars looks red. We finished the day off by reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Work hard and I will see you Friday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Reflections on Today and assignments for 3/17/09

Dear Families,

Another packed day. We enjoyed each others Bible pictures and narrations. Mrs. Stokes and I teamed up for stump the teacher and fared well in Latin. Many thanks to Mrs. Stokes for her hard work and her generous supply of snacks. In history we watched more of the Napoleon video I got from the library. We read some books about him and discussed him. No one is much of a fan. We compared the American Revolution with the French Revolution. In grammar, we studied a bit more on adverbs and had a quiz. It isn't counted as far as grading but helps me know how I'm doing teaching.

In Literature, we were so excited to present our book reports. All the books sound great and I'm very proud of how much your children enjoy reading. We listened to one more poem and completed our poetry books. They came home today. Please go through them with your child--they've worked hard. In history we visited Chef Todd's kitchen and made hardtack. We learned that this and dried peas and salt port were all many soldiers had to eat on board British War Ships during the Napoleonic Wars. Hopefully some made it home for your family to taste.
We took the science test (everyone seemed to do excellently) and finished the day reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Report cards will come home next Friday. We are entering the final quarter of the school year. Let us press on for the prize that lays ahead of us. . . SUMMER!

Enjoy the weekend and I will see you Tuesday.
love,
Mrs. Tkach

History:--read chapter 30

--Malaria was a real problem in Haiti. My activity guide suggests four remedies that were used to combat this disease. I want you to do two at home and write about the experience.

Doctors tried to break the fever by exposing the patient to temperature extremes. In addition to cold baths and cold drink, the patient was "sweated." He or she was wrapped in a blanket, then hot bricks soaked in vinegar were piled on top of him or her.

First, fill the bath tub with cold water and add some ice cubes. Get in and sit down (if you can!) Drink an icy drink while you're in there.

Second, after the bath, dry off and get dressed in warm clothes. Wrap yourself in blankets and stand near a heat source (a radiator, heat vent, or bath heater). Stay there until you start to sweat. Sweat for 15 minutes. Patients were "sweated" for 6 hours at a time for five or six days in a row!

--write down how you liked trying these cures
--we'll try the other cures in class Tuesday

Science: tell your parents how our biospheres looked today. Look up some unusual facts about Mars. We'll study it on Tuesday.

Latin:--review lesson 19
--complete page 93

Bible:--read chapter 43. This is a beautiful lesson, packed with application for our lives. Try to read it twice, once with your whole family.

A couple of my students told me they did not complete all their assigned homework. Please finish all that was due today along with the above assignments.

Also, we are wondering if Corsica is independent or still part of France today. Let's google and find out.

Our Tuesday and assignments for 3/13/09

Dear Families,

We had a busy Tuesday! I want to clear one humorous (I think) thing up. I did NOT have the children pretend to take opium! I love to have the children "live" the history we are studying so we often play act or actually do the activities we've learned about. We had studied opium in our last chapter on China then touched on it again in our poetry unit when we spoke of Coleridge's use of the drug. I guess that was just enough for the children to let their imaginations go. As we were outside planting grass seed during science, Mrs. Nicole brought us a drink of ginger ale and they began pretending it was opium! It made me smile but I wanted to be sure you knew the whole story. When we spoke about it last time I pointed out the Bible verse to them "Be not drunk with wine. . ." and applied it to the use of drugs. Whew! Hope I'm off the hook!

It was a great day. We did a matching activity in Bible and then acted out Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, complete with palm branches and cloaks to throw on the ground. (I couldn't find a colt for them to ride on. . .) In Latin, we did a few simple math problems that they answered in Latin and reviewed the constellations and pressed on into the next lesson. During history we viewed a PBS video on Napoleon that was very well made. We also did an activity about the Rosetta Stone together that was quite difficult. In literature, we learned about William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, two prominent poets of the time period we're studying in history. The children really seem to have learned alot and I am very proud of them. The poetry book we're making will be a keepsake. I'll send it home on Friday and there will be a quiz over parts of it the following Tuesday.

Grammar is progressing as scheduled. We may finish the book early, in which case I want to spend some time teaching some writing techniques that I taught last year. In science, we made a biosphere in our bottles and studied the Earth. We finished the day by going over the science study guide that I sent home. We will have a test on Friday.

Enjoy your time with your children--they are awesome!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our busy Friday and assignments for 3/10/09

Dear Families,

It was a whirlwind of a day! We had our picture taken with the entire Trinity student body. We enjoyed a great pizza party thanks to the Hatchell's generosity. Also Gamaliel brought in cupcakes for today was his birthday. We had show and tell after a two week wait. Mrs. Bachtel was our helper and was great. Another sweet lady with no child in our group but willing to help us. Many thanks!

Boy, I heard such stories about being blind! Hope you enjoyed that activity. In Latin, we played stump Mrs. Tkach and I did pretty well. We then played stump the students and I'm proud of how they did. We are plowing along in learning the Lord's Prayer in Latin. History was interesting as we learned about China, heard a story from Chinese literature, and read about Confuscious. You knew we'd have fun kowtowing to each other.

We jumped into adverbs in grammar and spent more time with poetry during literature. We are creating poetry books that they will be proud of. I think we're learning alot, too. We read an expample of a ballad today and began trying to write a limerick. In science, we joined the 4th/5th grade class to watch a video that showed the different sizes of celestial bodies. It gave great perspective and emphasized that the God that loves and pursues a relationship with each of us and notes each tear we cry is the powerful One that breathed the vast cosmos into existence. Wow!

It was a good day and I hope you have an even better weekend. My Citadel Cadet is bringing two buddies home so I'm loving that I'll be cooking and doing laundry all weekend (I really mean that, too!)

God bless,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for 3/6/09 and our day's recap

Good Evening!

Show and Tell on Friday! We had a good day. Many thanks to Mrs. Tronda for assisting us. Great discussion in Bible. In Latin time we reviewed the constellations before moving on to the lesson. We finished off the Chapter on inventions in History by reading a book about Robert Fulton. We tried making a steam paddle and have it spin using the power of steam coming from a tea kettle. We were less than successful, I'm sorry to say. We played Interchangeable Parts Bingo and got an idea of how many things around us are made using interchangeable parts. We finished adjectives in grammar and will move on to adverbs Friday. In Science we conducted an experiment that actually worked. We noticed the green house affect that keeps Venus so hot. A thermometer in a closed glass jar sat next to a t-meter just out in the air. The one in the jar was 18 degrees hotter ten minutes later. We looked at some poetry today and learned some things about its construction.

Whew! Pizza party on Friday because our pebble cup is full! Enjoy learning together and I will see you Friday!

Our Busy Friday and assignments for 3/3/09

Dear Families,

We had a great day. It was nice to have Chloe back--we're so glad she is well. Mrs. Kristen Miller was our helper and is a lot of fun. We discussed the Bible story and how we might change so that we're more like Jesus. I tried "stump the students" in Latin and they fared pretty well. History consisted of perusing some great books I had on inventions and then everyone told about their favorite invention. We also watched some excellent VHS videos on the engine and steam power. They were funny, short and informative. Grammar was short because we just learned about noun markers.

The school pictures should be great. In literature we ate blackberries and made candles. I hate saying good-bye to this book more than anyone. I wanted the children to "live" Ann Hamilton's life. Our arms got tired as we dipped and dipped to make only small candles. I hope you are able to make them work. There are small washers at the bottom of the candles. I instructed the children to get your help to melt a little wax into a small container and push their candle down into it before it hardens. Hopefully they'll stand up. Trim the wicks to 1/4 inch long and light them! Good Luck!

We also decorated covers for poetry books we are going to be creating in literature. I'm taking a brief rest from our stack of assigned books to present a unit on poetry in class. While doing this, I want each child to pick a book agreed upon by parent and student to enjoy at home. After you've finished, I want to hear a book report summarizing the book.

We had some good discussion in science and we started making a book on space. Ask your student why Venus is hotter than Mercury. They taught me!

Mrs. Fowler always helps on Fridays and she read some of The Witch of Blackbird Pond to us.
Enjoy your weekend and I will see you Tuesday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

our day and assignments for 2/27

Good Morning!

So much for me posting promptly! There was some problem at my house last night in getting on the internet. As I was ready to call Charter this morning and head to the library to use their computer, I tried one more time and VOILA! I'm connected! Who knows!?!

We had a great day except for the hole that Chloe should have occupied. She is ill and we missed her so much. We prayed for you--twice! Mrs. Joy was our helper and is always a lot of fun.

Bible had some interesting discussion, as always, and we formulated a "so what" from our story. We retook the Latin test and I have not yet graded them. I will count the highest grade of the two. History was fun. After reading our reports on Catherine the Great we put on disguises (rubber noses) and pretended to be detectives. We had just returned from Russia where we "dug up" little known facts about Catherine and reported them on the evening news. We had a microphone and Mrs. Joy was our cameraman. She may be able to let us view our broadcast next week. We'll see. . . At the end of the day we re-visited history by playing a game from SOTW that tested our knowledge of Catherine. It was time to go before there was a winner so we ate our game pieces (skittles) and packed up.

We worked through two grammar lessons and are learning much about adjectives. Literature was awesome! We went outside and had a tea party like Ann and her mom. I brought two china plates and we scrounged and found the rest of what we needed in the courtyard--just as Ann did on Hamilton Hill. Your children shelled peas! They thought this was the most interesting activity. We used the pods to make words like Andy did. We created a Venn diagram comparing our chores to the ones Ann had. It was a great discussion.

In science, Mr. Tkach constructed a solar oven for us. We took it outside and cooked a hot dog and compared it to one not placed in the oven. Our findings were that there was little difference. I believe this lab was meant to be conducted in the summer so we concluded our results were due to the winter season.

We have much to do and learn in the weeks ahead. Keep up your hard work--I'm proud of each of you!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Day and assignments for 2/24/09

Dear Families,

Another action-packed day! We had show-and-tell first. I've decided to put this off for two weeks and start having it every other Friday. It is so much fun but I think we're losing too much class time. We had a great Bible time. A "so what?" is when you think about a passage you've just read from the Bible and you ask yourself, "So what?" "How can I apply this to my life?" "How am I better now that I've spent time listening to God's Word?" We discussed our powerful God and how He has all our problems in the palm of His hands. We then read the Good Samaritan story and had fun acting it out.

Latin was fun, as always, when we play stump Mrs. Tkach. Mr. Robert (Milford's dad) was our morning time helper and joined in the game. Between us we were a pretty good team. By the way, we are going to retake the Latin test. Our grades ranged from 63 to 93. I don't think it was fair for me to give it after a weekend when there was not suppose to be any homework. It will be the exact same test so study before Tuesday.

I read the children a book about the French painter Redoute', painter of flowers. He lived through the French Revolution and the reign of terror. Your children seemed fascinated with him and it was just an after thought I threw in before we started discussing Russia and Catherine. Several of the students said they were too interested in Catherine to stop with just reading the first half of the chapter. WOW! We looked at some pictures of her and reviewed what we'd already learned about Russia and Peter the Great. We then read a beautiful Russian fairy tale about The Firebird. They loved it because it mentioned Baba Yaga, a fairy tale character we'd met weeks ago. Our history ended our day with coloring paper dolls of Catherine the Great. These came home for the children to finish. If you have clear contact paper, they will be more sturdy. There is no need to return them to me. (The boys weren't exactly pleased with paper dolls but they were good sports as the girls were when we sword fought!)

I think the grammar test went well. I stayed with the third graders and Mr. Robert helped the second graders. I kept reminding mine to slow down and think. When they did, they did great.
Literature is still my favorite! We tasted "wonders" rolled in sugar like Ann's mother made. We also tried traveling with a 10 pound baby and an iron pot. It was tough! Ask your student about it. (Baby Josiah Miller was invited but had a cold.) I really drilled them on personification and the beautiful imagery in this book. We had a great time. Have your student show you their illustration comparing a street with a road after reading the middle paragraph on page 43. We tried the thermometer experiment again in science and only did a little better. We'll press on next week.

Y'all stay warm and work diligently at your studies. I'll see you Tuesday.

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Reflections on our Tuesday

Dear Families,

My Beaufort High Lady Eagles lost a heart breaker last night by one point in the first round of the play-offs. I tell you this to say that my blogs should begin to be posted in a more timely manner now.

We had a great day. Mrs. Rhodes was our helper and she worked hard! I admire these sweet ladies that have no student in our class and yet roll up their sleeves and help our young students. We were still studying the French Revolution and viewed more parts of A Tale of Two Cities. We also made red Revolution hats and ribbons. I hope these made it home. Your student can sew! Ask your students why these hats were worn by the Revolutionaries.

In Bible we heard a story and worked with partners to answer questions over the lesson. In Latin we took the test after reviewing with flashcards and listening to the prayer a few times. I haven't checked these yet.

I plan to have a test on Friday in Grammar. The reviews in the book should prepare the students for these. Anything unclear as you review--just go back to that lesson and go over it.

Literature was my favorite. I LOVE this book. We finished reading ch. 3 in class. Amelia modeled the way Ann tied up her apron to hold the peas she picked. We then went outside and took turns shooting a slingshot like Andy used to kill his turkey. We made simple diaries and found secluded spots to write in them. I introduced personification to the children and we had fun discussing examples of that.

Science was a bust. The lab I planned required a functioning thermometer. The one Mr. Tkach loaned me let us down. He is remorseful and will have me set up by Friday. We did have a healthy discussion/review about our solar system. We debated Pluto being a planet and Riddock reminded us that a new planet has been discovered.

Remember this is a great time of year to concentrate on our studies. It's a while before another holiday, the weather often keeps us inside anyway, and the beach isn't calling to us yet. Work hard for your parents and I will see you Friday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Thoughts on our day Friday, February 13,2009

Dear Families,

I hope the word got to each home that there is no homework for Trinity this weekend. The board wanted us all to be able to enjoy a three day weekend with our families.

We had a great Friday. Mrs. Hatchell was our helper and always does amazingly. Amelia was out due to a family ski trip and we missed her. We continued talking about the French Revolution and even watched some snippets of the old A Tale of Two Cities movie. We even acted out the major events of the revolution. It's amazing how much we enjoyed cutting each other's heads off!

We aged paper and transposed our Valentine acrostic poems to the paper and exchanged them at the end of the day during our party. Our party was great as we decorated bags that Chloe generously donated.

I'm going to spend Tuesday still in France and get us back on schedule a week or so later in history. There is too much to learn about this important period to rush through.

There is absolutely no homework. However, I postponed the Latin test until Tuesday. You might want to play a few games with those flash cards Monday evening. Also, the Table Blessing is a struggle for some of us and it will definitely be on the test.

Enjoy each other and I will see you Tuesday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for Friday, February 6, 2009

Good Morning!

The Colonial Ball is tomorrow! It will consume us all, I'm sure. What a great experience that volunteers are making possible for us. Most of you are them! Thank you!

Please work hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We chopped off verses 11 and 12 (of Matthew 5). If you've lost your handout or can't read the copies I made yesterday, it is the NIV version of Matthew 5:3--10. I'll round up the kids 15 minutes or so before 6:00 on Thursday and we'll find a quiet spot to practice being in unison, etc. The children will stay with me until after they perform at which time they will come sit with their families.

Here's an easy song I forgot to teach them Tuesday.

I'm a little teapot, short and stout.
The British took my tea and now I pout!
This has me steamed up, hear me shout.
Give me tea or trouble will mount!

We probably
won't sing it but I told Mrs. Joy we'd have it ready in case there is a slow moment in the dancing.

I'm
excited to enjoy the evening with you and will see you Thursday!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for 2/3/09

Good Morning!

Beaufort Lady Eagles won again last night!!! Hence, I'm late posting my blog. We had a great day! It was packed. We finally got to examine our "Jenkin's Ears" and boy were they RIPE! PEE-YEW! Mr. Jenkins definitely made the right choice in preserving his ear in rum. The one stored in nothing was rank, the one in salt water was a bit worse, and the one in sugar water made us all gag! The one in alcohol, however, just smelled sterile like alcohol. We read a couple of great books in history, as well. Nathan Hale, Patriot Spy and They Called Her Molly Pitcher. We discussed the constitution and the three parts of our government and the checks and balances built in by the Founding Fathers.

The best part of history was a visit to another part of the church where one of Mrs. Nicole's friends brought his collection of Revolutionary War artifacts to present to us and let us see. It was great. He showed us his flint-lock musket and spoke to us about the difference between it and the matchlock gun we're reading about in literature. We saw many extraordinary things and got to hold a cannon ball and deer antler fork and see priceless jewelry as well as examine coins from the period. What a treat!

In lit we wrapped up The Matchlock Gun with a play. It was unanimous that we all loved the book. I was suppose to introduce our next selection, Francis Marion, but we ran out of time. This is a change from The Cabin Faced West which was what I told the students would come next. In science we were amazed to see Sarah's stout plants really take off growing. No one else's pushed past the plaster. Some did have roots showing. We did a lab about soil and the ingredients. We made our own soil which you can see in your student's science book. It even includes dead bugs!

In grammar we were introduced to direct objects. Once again, if we can cement the knowledge about this part of grammar now, we will be doing a great service for our children in the future.

I love you all and have rambled on too long. The ball will be great. Please work real hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We are to play the part of the governor's children and recite them for the crowd. We may even sing a silly little song that I'll teach the children on Tuesday.

Enjoy each other and stay warm!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

assignments for 1/30/09

Dear Families,

We had a busy day. We chugged through history and produced a narration in class. Mrs. Nicole was our scribe and you should find your child's copy in their homework folder. We had a hole in our day because our Amelia was ill and could not join us. We prayed for you!

I hammered grammar pretty hard. We reviewed and spent time on helping verbs. We went over and over past tense verbs and helper verbs (known as past participles in later grades). I was relentless and they seem to have it. Please be diligent about grammar. It builds and if you see holes let me know and we will work in class. The review you do at home of the lessons is VERY important. Please don't just send them off to read the lesson on their own. Walk through it with them.

We love this lit book. We enjoyed our simile illustrations and found some more. Ask your student the difference in a simile and a metaphor. We discussed Trudie and then made a handkerchief doll like the one that kept her quiet in the story. I hope they made it home. We are following up on some labs in science. The lima beans we planted are in various stages. Sarah's grew the most and pushed the plaster right up. It is a great illustration of erosion caused by plants. We looked at soil and discussed the difference in organic and inorganic material.

Please don't stress over the reports I assigned in history. You and your student should be able to find all the info asked for very easily. You second graders might want to simply answer the suggestions/questions on the assignment page and then have your student turn the answers into complete sentences and, voila, you have a report. Again, I will expect more from my 3rd graders. I'm following the schedule approved by the board for working through SOTW. We have a very short time on the American Revolution so I thought this was a way we can learn a lot from each other.

I was in the doghouse because I forgot the "ears". They will be there Friday and even more "ripe"!

I missed the PTA meeting and would have loved being there. Girl's Basketball consumes the Tkachs at this time of the year. I've mentioned many times how I miss my big, college boys. I'm striving to enjoy every minute I have with my beautiful, high school junior. I'm sure you all learned from Mrs. Fowler. She is amazing.

Enjoy the week of learning with your student.

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Day and Assignments for 1/27/09

Greetings!

I've just returned from Summerville where the Beaufort High Lady Eagles dominated the Summberville Green Wave (our arch rivals)! YEAH! Forgive me. It was a great evening at my house.

We also had a great day. I hope everyone still loves me even though I sent dirt home with your student. Please, before they are destroyed, ask your child what they are. During Literature, we "churned" butter like Edward's family had to. Even Riddock (who has readily eaten turnips and Borscht) was hesitant to taste the butter. Once he finally did, several others joined him and enjoyed the fruit of our labors. We are mid way through a lab testing how different particles will settle in science. Bible included a good discussion of leprosy. We talked about pain actually being a good thing. We moved into talking about the pain of a guilty conscience being good if it pushes us to make our wrongs right.

Enjoy this calm time of year with your child. Watch them when they don't know you are and thank God for at least 5 things about them.

Until Tuesday. . . . .

love,
Mrs. Tkach

SNOW!!!!!!! (and assignments for 1/23/09)

Good Evening!

We had a great day. Tough to keep their interest with snow outside the window. Add to that, watching a piece of history take place with the inauguration--it was really tough to hold their interest. I do, however, believe learning happened.

I spent a lot of years confused about the French and Indian Wars. I am determined to make every effort to keep my students from operating in confusion over these misnamed wars. Along those lines, I found the most incredible book on the subject at the public library. It is called Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars 1689--1763. The author is Betsy Maestro. Outstanding! It is too long for me to read in class so I tried to summarize today and share the fabulous illustrations with the students. I hope they learned from it. I'll have it Friday to share more from. I'm going to check with Nicole and make an offer (with her approval) to anyone that checks it out and reads it thoroughly with a parent to a lunch date with her. We'll see. . .

We conducted a great project in history about The War of Jenkin's Ear--you've probably heard about it. Science was fun with a little more of a hands-on lab about erosion. Grammar covered some difficult topics so, once again, please give these lessons extra attention.

I love our little literature selection! We went to the youth suite and Mr. Tim helped us watch a youtube video of a matchlock gun being fired. We read the Foreward in class and looked up the places on our map. Enjoy this book with your child--it's great. I love when our lit selection meshes with where we are in our history studies.

We played in the snow and the children were a pure delight as they squealed with pleasure as they raced about trying to catch flakes on their tongues. As we had our closing prayer, we asked God to help our new president and we asked for a little more snow to play in. I received some at my house! Hope you each did, as well.

Many thanks to Mrs. Beth who has a daughter in the upper grades and joined us today. She was great!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

Our Chilly Friday and Assignments for 1/20/09

Dear Families,

We had a packed Friday. I'm not going to give you too much detail because one of the assignments is for your student to recall and teach you some things they learned. My son, Thomas, was a guest and two other classes joined us as he told us about his trips to Beijing. We spent alot of time in history again this week but with more active projects rather than producing a narration. We bid farewell to Mowgli and our jungle as we discussed scary events in our lives as well as times we were brave. We conducted a quick lab in science to learn about wind erosion.

You are all doing a great job of teaching your children and it is obvious. Keep it up. I spoke with them about really buckling down and working hard on their schooling this quarter of the year. It is a speech I've given every year. The first quarter of a school year we are getting to know each other, the second quarter is filled with holidays, and the last quarter "beach" fever is a distraction. This third quarter is the time to buckle down and learn a lot. I'll try to have interesting projects that stimulate their desire to learn.

Y'all keep warm!

love,
Mrs. Tkach

ASSIGNMENTS:

Literature:--

--bring The Matchlock Gun on Tuesday

Have your parent write down what they learned from you and bring it to class Tuesday. Only if they need help, parents prompt them with questions like: What foods are eaten in China? What drink did y'all make? Who is the Dalai Lama? How was he punished as a child?
--read first part of ch. 21
--answer review questions (My printer is getting repaired this week. This should be the last time I have to e-mail them to you. Look for that e-mail Sat morning)

Our Cold, Rainy Day and assignments for 1/16

Dear Parents,

I feel we had a productive day. We missed Woods and tried not to envy him since he was at DISNEY!!! Kirsten was missing and may school at home for a while. She is missed greatly.

After an in-depth grammar lesson during Latin we moved into a lengthy History lesson. We constructed a narration on this lengthy chapter and it took a while. Mrs. Tronda, my able assistant, functioned as a scribe for us. Many thanks! Your child has a copy in their homework folder for you to place in their notebook.

We launched into the be verbs during grammar. The third graders need to memorize all eight of the forms of the be verb. Literature was interesting because we talked about comparing and contrasting. We had a huge Venn Diagram on the board and we stood Amelia and Gamaliel up in front and filled the diagram up as we compared and contrasted them. The "Portraits" page came home again--this time it was suppose to! We read our reports on Rudyard Kipling. Mrs. Tronda and Chloe had found some interesting facts concerning him and the formation of the Boy Scouts. He was a part of that process and certain designations were taken from The Jungle Book. (Wolf Scout, Den Mother, Pack, etc.) I think she has the article if any are interested in a copy.

We finished our day by joining the 4th/5th graders for a video on erosion. As we waited for dismissal we heard some more of Kit in The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I almost forgot to mention our Black Hole of Calcutta project. It was delicious!!! Ask your student. . .

Sounds like the weather is going to make this week a good one to spend working hard on our schooling. Enjoy each other and maybe try a few "selfless acts" again.

love,
Mrs. Tkach
