Reflections on Today and assignments for 5/15/09

Dear Parents,

We had a great day. We did several activities outside. I'm not sure if I stirred them up with those or its just spring fever, but our behavior was not good. I scolded several times, we had no pebbles put in our cup, and I'm exhausted. Please encourage your student to work with me to finish this awesome year in an excellent manner.

Mrs. Mary Sanders was our helper and helped me so much. Many thanks. In Bible, we went outside and acted out the stoning of Peter (Sarah). We even layed our coats at Saul's (Amelia) feet.

In Latin, we listened to the last lesson in our book. We recited the Lord's Prayer and stumped Mrs. Tkach. In history, I was a bit disappointed in the books recommended in SOTW that the library tracked down for me. They were all too long to read at school. They did have some great pictures so we perused them and I taught them some Texas history that I knew. We went out to the courtyard and played a great Texas Ranger game using our badges. Have your child explain it to you.

In grammar we touched on a few more lessons. We probably won't do any grammar next week because the last lessons are on poetry and I feel we covered everything we needed to back when we did our poetry unit in literature. In literature, we walked and found a pile of leaves. We spread a blanket on it and took turns laying on it to feel what Davy had to sleep on. When someone brought up red bugs we wondered if Davy had to worry about them in his mattress. We also tried to walk silently through leaves as Davy's Uncle Joe taught him to do. Lastly, we filled out a sheet with questions about our book that we hope to find answers to by the end of the book.

We conducted our last science lab. It was great fun and quite messy. We dropped golf balls into a pan of flour from different heights. We were trying to simulate how craters are made on the moon. Be sure and ask your student about it.

When I realized that my library books were not going to be very effective for class reading, I grabbed the lego box as a time filler. We all tried building a Alamo model. It was fun and several were accurately done--even having James Bowie sick in bed but fighting to the death from his sick bed. Be sure and ask your student to tell about Travis' line in the dirt and how Bowie got across it.

The day ended with a little more lego fun and a few more pages in The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I will miss my students on Friday but I'm most thankful to God for the opportunity to celebrate my son's hard work for the last four years. I will pray for you while I'm gone. Be good to Mrs. Debi and treat her with kindness and respect. Oh yes, I want to put off our last show-and-tell until Tuesday. I want to enjoy your treasures!

love,
Mrs. Tkach
