Dear Families,
My Beaufort High Lady Eagles lost a heart breaker last night by one point in the first round of the play-offs. I tell you this to say that my blogs should begin to be posted in a more timely manner now.
We had a great day. Mrs. Rhodes was our helper and she worked hard! I admire these sweet ladies that have no student in our class and yet roll up their sleeves and help our young students. We were still studying the French Revolution and viewed more parts of A Tale of Two Cities. We also made red Revolution hats and ribbons. I hope these made it home. Your student can sew! Ask your students why these hats were worn by the Revolutionaries.
In Bible we heard a story and worked with partners to answer questions over the lesson. In Latin we took the test after reviewing with flashcards and listening to the prayer a few times. I haven't checked these yet.
I plan to have a test on Friday in Grammar. The reviews in the book should prepare the students for these. Anything unclear as you review--just go back to that lesson and go over it.
Literature was my favorite. I LOVE this book. We finished reading ch. 3 in class. Amelia modeled the way Ann tied up her apron to hold the peas she picked. We then went outside and took turns shooting a slingshot like Andy used to kill his turkey. We made simple diaries and found secluded spots to write in them. I introduced personification to the children and we had fun discussing examples of that.
Science was a bust. The lab I planned required a functioning thermometer. The one Mr. Tkach loaned me let us down. He is remorseful and will have me set up by Friday. We did have a healthy discussion/review about our solar system. We debated Pluto being a planet and Riddock reminded us that a new planet has been discovered.
Remember this is a great time of year to concentrate on our studies. It's a while before another holiday, the weather often keeps us inside anyway, and the beach isn't calling to us yet. Work hard for your parents and I will see you Friday!

Thoughts on our day Friday, February 13,2009
Dear Families,
I hope the word got to each home that there is no homework for Trinity this weekend. The board wanted us all to be able to enjoy a three day weekend with our families.
We had a great Friday. Mrs. Hatchell was our helper and always does amazingly. Amelia was out due to a family ski trip and we missed her. We continued talking about the French Revolution and even watched some snippets of the old A Tale of Two Cities movie. We even acted out the major events of the revolution. It's amazing how much we enjoyed cutting each other's heads off!
We aged paper and transposed our Valentine acrostic poems to the paper and exchanged them at the end of the day during our party. Our party was great as we decorated bags that Chloe generously donated.
I'm going to spend Tuesday still in France and get us back on schedule a week or so later in history. There is too much to learn about this important period to rush through.
There is absolutely no homework. However, I postponed the Latin test until Tuesday. You might want to play a few games with those flash cards Monday evening. Also, the Table Blessing is a struggle for some of us and it will definitely be on the test.

my lonely day and assignments for 2/13/09
Dear Students,
I missed you so much. Whenever one of you is absent there is a hole in class. Yesterday, I experienced 6 holes! My voice is on the mend and I will be back on Friday.

Good Morning!
The Colonial Ball is tomorrow! It will consume us all, I'm sure. What a great experience that volunteers are making possible for us. Most of you are them! Thank you!
Please work hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We chopped off verses 11 and 12 (of Matthew 5). If you've lost your handout or can't read the copies I made yesterday, it is the NIV version of Matthew 5:3--10. I'll round up the kids 15 minutes or so before 6:00 on Thursday and we'll find a quiet spot to practice being in unison, etc. The children will stay with me until after they perform at which time they will come sit with their families.
Here's an easy song I forgot to teach them Tuesday.
I'm a little teapot, short and stout.
The British took my tea and now I pout!
This has me steamed up, hear me shout.
Give me tea or trouble will mount!
We probably won't sing it but I told Mrs. Joy we'd have it ready in case there is a slow moment in the dancing.
I'm excited to enjoy the evening with you and will see you Thursday!

assignments for 2/3/09
Good Morning!
Beaufort Lady Eagles won again last night!!! Hence, I'm late posting my blog. We had a great day! It was packed. We finally got to examine our "Jenkin's Ears" and boy were they RIPE! PEE-YEW! Mr. Jenkins definitely made the right choice in preserving his ear in rum. The one stored in nothing was rank, the one in salt water was a bit worse, and the one in sugar water made us all gag! The one in alcohol, however, just smelled sterile like alcohol. We read a couple of great books in history, as well. Nathan Hale, Patriot Spy and They Called Her Molly Pitcher. We discussed the constitution and the three parts of our government and the checks and balances built in by the Founding Fathers.
The best part of history was a visit to another part of the church where one of Mrs. Nicole's friends brought his collection of Revolutionary War artifacts to present to us and let us see. It was great. He showed us his flint-lock musket and spoke to us about the difference between it and the matchlock gun we're reading about in literature. We saw many extraordinary things and got to hold a cannon ball and deer antler fork and see priceless jewelry as well as examine coins from the period. What a treat!
In lit we wrapped up The Matchlock Gun with a play. It was unanimous that we all loved the book. I was suppose to introduce our next selection, Francis Marion, but we ran out of time. This is a change from The Cabin Faced West which was what I told the students would come next. In science we were amazed to see Sarah's stout plants really take off growing. No one else's pushed past the plaster. Some did have roots showing. We did a lab about soil and the ingredients. We made our own soil which you can see in your student's science book. It even includes dead bugs!
In grammar we were introduced to direct objects. Once again, if we can cement the knowledge about this part of grammar now, we will be doing a great service for our children in the future.
I love you all and have rambled on too long. The ball will be great. Please work real hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We are to play the part of the governor's children and recite them for the crowd. We may even sing a silly little song that I'll teach the children on Tuesday.
