Good Morning!
The Colonial Ball is tomorrow! It will consume us all, I'm sure. What a great experience that volunteers are making possible for us. Most of you are them! Thank you!
Please work hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We chopped off verses 11 and 12 (of Matthew 5). If you've lost your handout or can't read the copies I made yesterday, it is the NIV version of Matthew 5:3--10. I'll round up the kids 15 minutes or so before 6:00 on Thursday and we'll find a quiet spot to practice being in unison, etc. The children will stay with me until after they perform at which time they will come sit with their families.
Here's an easy song I forgot to teach them Tuesday.
I'm a little teapot, short and stout.
The British took my tea and now I pout!
This has me steamed up, hear me shout.
Give me tea or trouble will mount!
We probably won't sing it but I told Mrs. Joy we'd have it ready in case there is a slow moment in the dancing.

assignments for 2/3/09
Good Morning!
Beaufort Lady Eagles won again last night!!! Hence, I'm late posting my blog. We had a great day! It was packed. We finally got to examine our "Jenkin's Ears" and boy were they RIPE! PEE-YEW! Mr. Jenkins definitely made the right choice in preserving his ear in rum. The one stored in nothing was rank, the one in salt water was a bit worse, and the one in sugar water made us all gag! The one in alcohol, however, just smelled sterile like alcohol. We read a couple of great books in history, as well. Nathan Hale, Patriot Spy and They Called Her Molly Pitcher. We discussed the constitution and the three parts of our government and the checks and balances built in by the Founding Fathers.
The best part of history was a visit to another part of the church where one of Mrs. Nicole's friends brought his collection of Revolutionary War artifacts to present to us and let us see. It was great. He showed us his flint-lock musket and spoke to us about the difference between it and the matchlock gun we're reading about in literature. We saw many extraordinary things and got to hold a cannon ball and deer antler fork and see priceless jewelry as well as examine coins from the period. What a treat!
In lit we wrapped up The Matchlock Gun with a play. It was unanimous that we all loved the book. I was suppose to introduce our next selection, Francis Marion, but we ran out of time. This is a change from The Cabin Faced West which was what I told the students would come next. In science we were amazed to see Sarah's stout plants really take off growing. No one else's pushed past the plaster. Some did have roots showing. We did a lab about soil and the ingredients. We made our own soil which you can see in your student's science book. It even includes dead bugs!
In grammar we were introduced to direct objects. Once again, if we can cement the knowledge about this part of grammar now, we will be doing a great service for our children in the future.
I love you all and have rambled on too long. The ball will be great. Please work real hard on memorizing the Beattitudes. We are to play the part of the governor's children and recite them for the crowd. We may even sing a silly little song that I'll teach the children on Tuesday.

assignments for 1/30/09
Dear Families,
We had a busy day. We chugged through history and produced a narration in class. Mrs. Nicole was our scribe and you should find your child's copy in their homework folder. We had a hole in our day because our Amelia was ill and could not join us. We prayed for you!
I hammered grammar pretty hard. We reviewed and spent time on helping verbs. We went over and over past tense verbs and helper verbs (known as past participles in later grades). I was relentless and they seem to have it. Please be diligent about grammar. It builds and if you see holes let me know and we will work in class. The review you do at home of the lessons is VERY important. Please don't just send them off to read the lesson on their own. Walk through it with them.
We love this lit book. We enjoyed our simile illustrations and found some more. Ask your student the difference in a simile and a metaphor. We discussed Trudie and then made a handkerchief doll like the one that kept her quiet in the story. I hope they made it home. We are following up on some labs in science. The lima beans we planted are in various stages. Sarah's grew the most and pushed the plaster right up. It is a great illustration of erosion caused by plants. We looked at soil and discussed the difference in organic and inorganic material.
Please don't stress over the reports I assigned in history. You and your student should be able to find all the info asked for very easily. You second graders might want to simply answer the suggestions/questions on the assignment page and then have your student turn the answers into complete sentences and, voila, you have a report. Again, I will expect more from my 3rd graders. I'm following the schedule approved by the board for working through SOTW. We have a very short time on the American Revolution so I thought this was a way we can learn a lot from each other.
I was in the doghouse because I forgot the "ears". They will be there Friday and even more "ripe"!
I missed the PTA meeting and would have loved being there. Girl's Basketball consumes the Tkachs at this time of the year. I've mentioned many times how I miss my big, college boys. I'm striving to enjoy every minute I have with my beautiful, high school junior. I'm sure you all learned from Mrs. Fowler. She is amazing.

Our Day and Assignments for 1/27/09
Greetings!
I've just returned from Summerville where the Beaufort High Lady Eagles dominated the Summberville Green Wave (our arch rivals)! YEAH! Forgive me. It was a great evening at my house.
We also had a great day. I hope everyone still loves me even though I sent dirt home with your student. Please, before they are destroyed, ask your child what they are. During Literature, we "churned" butter like Edward's family had to. Even Riddock (who has readily eaten turnips and Borscht) was hesitant to taste the butter. Once he finally did, several others joined him and enjoyed the fruit of our labors. We are mid way through a lab testing how different particles will settle in science. Bible included a good discussion of leprosy. We talked about pain actually being a good thing. We moved into talking about the pain of a guilty conscience being good if it pushes us to make our wrongs right.
Enjoy this calm time of year with your child. Watch them when they don't know you are and thank God for at least 5 things about them.

SNOW!!!!!!! (and assignments for 1/23/09)
Good Evening!
We had a great day. Tough to keep their interest with snow outside the window. Add to that, watching a piece of history take place with the inauguration--it was really tough to hold their interest. I do, however, believe learning happened.
I spent a lot of years confused about the French and Indian Wars. I am determined to make every effort to keep my students from operating in confusion over these misnamed wars. Along those lines, I found the most incredible book on the subject at the public library. It is called Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars 1689--1763. The author is Betsy Maestro. Outstanding! It is too long for me to read in class so I tried to summarize today and share the fabulous illustrations with the students. I hope they learned from it. I'll have it Friday to share more from. I'm going to check with Nicole and make an offer (with her approval) to anyone that checks it out and reads it thoroughly with a parent to a lunch date with her. We'll see. . .
We conducted a great project in history about The War of Jenkin's Ear--you've probably heard about it. Science was fun with a little more of a hands-on lab about erosion. Grammar covered some difficult topics so, once again, please give these lessons extra attention.
I love our little literature selection! We went to the youth suite and Mr. Tim helped us watch a youtube video of a matchlock gun being fired. We read the Foreward in class and looked up the places on our map. Enjoy this book with your child--it's great. I love when our lit selection meshes with where we are in our history studies.
We played in the snow and the children were a pure delight as they squealed with pleasure as they raced about trying to catch flakes on their tongues. As we had our closing prayer, we asked God to help our new president and we asked for a little more snow to play in. I received some at my house! Hope you each did, as well.

Our Chilly Friday and Assignments for 1/20/09
Dear Families,
We had a packed Friday. I'm not going to give you too much detail because one of the assignments is for your student to recall and teach you some things they learned. My son, Thomas, was a guest and two other classes joined us as he told us about his trips to Beijing. We spent alot of time in history again this week but with more active projects rather than producing a narration. We bid farewell to Mowgli and our jungle as we discussed scary events in our lives as well as times we were brave. We conducted a quick lab in science to learn about wind erosion.
You are all doing a great job of teaching your children and it is obvious. Keep it up. I spoke with them about really buckling down and working hard on their schooling this quarter of the year. It is a speech I've given every year. The first quarter of a school year we are getting to know each other, the second quarter is filled with holidays, and the last quarter "beach" fever is a distraction. This third quarter is the time to buckle down and learn a lot. I'll try to have interesting projects that stimulate their desire to learn.

ASSIGNMENTS:
Grammar: NOTE: We had an accidental fire drill. That along with hosting two other classes to hear Thomas was a bit distracting and I feel my grammar lesson was a bit scattered. Please teach these two lessons carefully to your student. They are not hard but I don't think I did a very good job.
3rd:--review lesson 58 on page 149

--complete "Using Was and Were"
--review lesson 59 on page 150
--complete ex. A and B
--complete "Using Have, Had, and Has"
2nd--read lesson 24 on page 114
--complete "For Yo To Do"
--read lesson 11 on page 146
--complete Oral Drill with Mom
--complete "For You To Do" only 4 sentences using the pronouns once
Literature:--
--bring The Matchlock Gun on Tuesday
History:
--tell your parents as many things as you can (minimum of 3 for 2nd graders and 5 for third) that you learned in class (from Thomas' presentation, books read, projects done). Have your parent write down what they learned from you and bring it to class Tuesday. Only if they need help, parents prompt them with questions like: What foods are eaten in China? What drink did y'all make? Who is the Dalai Lama? How was he punished as a child?

--answer review questions (My printer is getting repaired this week. This should be the last time I have to e-mail them to you. Look for that e-mail Sat morning)
