Dear Families,
We had a good day. In Bible we discussed how we can "do it unto the least of these" even when it is hard to do. We tried a word search that Arianna made for me last night. We didn't quite finish so the students can finish that at home if they wish. In Latin we did not press on into a new lesson. Instead, we got with partners and worked on the Lord's Prayer. Please be sure those sheets come back to class and we'll do it again next week. In history, we produced a narration that your student has a copy of for their notebook. We heard a Haitian story called The Tap Tap. Ask your student about it. We heard about the cures for malaria tried at home and tried the other two in class. This involved tasting milk and lime juice mixed and a warm mustard salve on our necks to get our blood flowing.
In grammar we keep pounding away at adverbs and adjectives. Lesson 88 today needs special attention at home. It deals with the three question words: how, when, and where being adverbs themselves. It is a bit confusing so go over it well. In literature we talked about the genre biography. This was when we shared our treasures and discussed how the items and picture paint a biographical picture of the owner. We also made pouches like Bird Girl made in the book. In science, your biospheres came home. Aren't they amazing!?!?! We also did a lab about Mars. We're rusting some steel wool. We'll observe it next time and see why Mars looks red. We finished the day off by reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Reflections on Today and assignments for 3/17/09
Dear Families,
Another packed day. We enjoyed each others Bible pictures and narrations. Mrs. Stokes and I teamed up for stump the teacher and fared well in Latin. Many thanks to Mrs. Stokes for her hard work and her generous supply of snacks. In history we watched more of the Napoleon video I got from the library. We read some books about him and discussed him. No one is much of a fan. We compared the American Revolution with the French Revolution. In grammar, we studied a bit more on adverbs and had a quiz. It isn't counted as far as grading but helps me know how I'm doing teaching.
In Literature, we were so excited to present our book reports. All the books sound great and I'm very proud of how much your children enjoy reading. We listened to one more poem and completed our poetry books. They came home today. Please go through them with your child--they've worked hard. In history we visited Chef Todd's kitchen and made hardtack. We learned that this and dried peas and salt port were all many soldiers had to eat on board British War Ships during the Napoleonic Wars. Hopefully some made it home for your family to taste.
We took the science test (everyone seemed to do excellently) and finished the day reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond.
Report cards will come home next Friday. We are entering the final quarter of the school year. Let us press on for the prize that lays ahead of us. . . SUMMER!

--Malaria was a real problem in Haiti. My activity guide suggests four remedies that were used to combat this disease. I want you to do two at home and write about the experience.
Doctors tried to break the fever by exposing the patient to temperature extremes. In addition to cold baths and cold drink, the patient was "sweated." He or she was wrapped in a blanket, then hot bricks soaked in vinegar were piled on top of him or her.
First, fill the bath tub with cold water and add some ice cubes. Get in and sit down (if you can!) Drink an icy drink while you're in there.
Second, after the bath, dry off and get dressed in warm clothes. Wrap yourself in blankets and stand near a heat source (a radiator, heat vent, or bath heater). Stay there until you start to sweat. Sweat for 15 minutes. Patients were "sweated" for 6 hours at a time for five or six days in a row!

Our Tuesday and assignments for 3/13/09
Dear Families,
We had a busy Tuesday! I want to clear one humorous (I think) thing up. I did NOT have the children pretend to take opium! I love to have the children "live" the history we are studying so we often play act or actually do the activities we've learned about. We had studied opium in our last chapter on China then touched on it again in our poetry unit when we spoke of Coleridge's use of the drug. I guess that was just enough for the children to let their imaginations go. As we were outside planting grass seed during science, Mrs. Nicole brought us a drink of ginger ale and they began pretending it was opium! It made me smile but I wanted to be sure you knew the whole story. When we spoke about it last time I pointed out the Bible verse to them "Be not drunk with wine. . ." and applied it to the use of drugs. Whew! Hope I'm off the hook!
It was a great day. We did a matching activity in Bible and then acted out Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, complete with palm branches and cloaks to throw on the ground. (I couldn't find a colt for them to ride on. . .) In Latin, we did a few simple math problems that they answered in Latin and reviewed the constellations and pressed on into the next lesson. During history we viewed a PBS video on Napoleon that was very well made. We also did an activity about the Rosetta Stone together that was quite difficult. In literature, we learned about William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, two prominent poets of the time period we're studying in history. The children really seem to have learned alot and I am very proud of them. The poetry book we're making will be a keepsake. I'll send it home on Friday and there will be a quiz over parts of it the following Tuesday.
Grammar is progressing as scheduled. We may finish the book early, in which case I want to spend some time teaching some writing techniques that I taught last year. In science, we made a biosphere in our bottles and studied the Earth. We finished the day by going over the science study guide that I sent home. We will have a test on Friday.

Our busy Friday and assignments for 3/10/09
Dear Families,
It was a whirlwind of a day! We had our picture taken with the entire Trinity student body. We enjoyed a great pizza party thanks to the Hatchell's generosity. Also Gamaliel brought in cupcakes for today was his birthday. We had show and tell after a two week wait. Mrs. Bachtel was our helper and was great. Another sweet lady with no child in our group but willing to help us. Many thanks!
Boy, I heard such stories about being blind! Hope you enjoyed that activity. In Latin, we played stump Mrs. Tkach and I did pretty well. We then played stump the students and I'm proud of how they did. We are plowing along in learning the Lord's Prayer in Latin. History was interesting as we learned about China, heard a story from Chinese literature, and read about Confuscious. You knew we'd have fun kowtowing to each other.
We jumped into adverbs in grammar and spent more time with poetry during literature. We are creating poetry books that they will be proud of. I think we're learning alot, too. We read an expample of a ballad today and began trying to write a limerick. In science, we joined the 4th/5th grade class to watch a video that showed the different sizes of celestial bodies. It gave great perspective and emphasized that the God that loves and pursues a relationship with each of us and notes each tear we cry is the powerful One that breathed the vast cosmos into existence. Wow!
It was a good day and I hope you have an even better weekend. My Citadel Cadet is bringing two buddies home so I'm loving that I'll be cooking and doing laundry all weekend (I really mean that, too!)

assignments for 3/6/09 and our day's recap
Good Evening!
Show and Tell on Friday! We had a good day. Many thanks to Mrs. Tronda for assisting us. Great discussion in Bible. In Latin time we reviewed the constellations before moving on to the lesson. We finished off the Chapter on inventions in History by reading a book about Robert Fulton. We tried making a steam paddle and have it spin using the power of steam coming from a tea kettle. We were less than successful, I'm sorry to say. We played Interchangeable Parts Bingo and got an idea of how many things around us are made using interchangeable parts. We finished adjectives in grammar and will move on to adverbs Friday. In Science we conducted an experiment that actually worked. We noticed the green house affect that keeps Venus so hot. A thermometer in a closed glass jar sat next to a t-meter just out in the air. The one in the jar was 18 degrees hotter ten minutes later. We looked at some poetry today and learned some things about its construction.
Whew! Pizza party on Friday because our pebble cup is full! Enjoy learning together and I will see you Friday!

Our Busy Friday and assignments for 3/3/09
Dear Families,
We had a great day. It was nice to have Chloe back--we're so glad she is well. Mrs. Kristen Miller was our helper and is a lot of fun. We discussed the Bible story and how we might change so that we're more like Jesus. I tried "stump the students" in Latin and they fared pretty well. History consisted of perusing some great books I had on inventions and then everyone told about their favorite invention. We also watched some excellent VHS videos on the engine and steam power. They were funny, short and informative. Grammar was short because we just learned about noun markers.
The school pictures should be great. In literature we ate blackberries and made candles. I hate saying good-bye to this book more than anyone. I wanted the children to "live" Ann Hamilton's life. Our arms got tired as we dipped and dipped to make only small candles. I hope you are able to make them work. There are small washers at the bottom of the candles. I instructed the children to get your help to melt a little wax into a small container and push their candle down into it before it hardens. Hopefully they'll stand up. Trim the wicks to 1/4 inch long and light them! Good Luck!
We also decorated covers for poetry books we are going to be creating in literature. I'm taking a brief rest from our stack of assigned books to present a unit on poetry in class. While doing this, I want each child to pick a book agreed upon by parent and student to enjoy at home. After you've finished, I want to hear a book report summarizing the book.
We had some good discussion in science and we started making a book on space. Ask your student why Venus is hotter than Mercury. They taught me!
Mrs. Fowler always helps on Fridays and she read some of The Witch of Blackbird Pond to us.

We had some good discussion in science and we started making a book on space. Ask your student why Venus is hotter than Mercury. They taught me!
Mrs. Fowler always helps on Fridays and she read some of The Witch of Blackbird Pond to us.

our day and assignments for 2/27
Good Morning!
So much for me posting promptly! There was some problem at my house last night in getting on the internet. As I was ready to call Charter this morning and head to the library to use their computer, I tried one more time and VOILA! I'm connected! Who knows!?!
We had a great day except for the hole that Chloe should have occupied. She is ill and we missed her so much. We prayed for you--twice! Mrs. Joy was our helper and is always a lot of fun.
Bible had some interesting discussion, as always, and we formulated a "so what" from our story. We retook the Latin test and I have not yet graded them. I will count the highest grade of the two. History was fun. After reading our reports on Catherine the Great we put on disguises (rubber noses) and pretended to be detectives. We had just returned from Russia where we "dug up" little known facts about Catherine and reported them on the evening news. We had a microphone and Mrs. Joy was our cameraman. She may be able to let us view our broadcast next week. We'll see. . . At the end of the day we re-visited history by playing a game from SOTW that tested our knowledge of Catherine. It was time to go before there was a winner so we ate our game pieces (skittles) and packed up.
We worked through two grammar lessons and are learning much about adjectives. Literature was awesome! We went outside and had a tea party like Ann and her mom. I brought two china plates and we scrounged and found the rest of what we needed in the courtyard--just as Ann did on Hamilton Hill. Your children shelled peas! They thought this was the most interesting activity. We used the pods to make words like Andy did. We created a Venn diagram comparing our chores to the ones Ann had. It was a great discussion.
In science, Mr. Tkach constructed a solar oven for us. We took it outside and cooked a hot dog and compared it to one not placed in the oven. Our findings were that there was little difference. I believe this lab was meant to be conducted in the summer so we concluded our results were due to the winter season.
We have much to do and learn in the weeks ahead. Keep up your hard work--I'm proud of each of you!
